I watched him do his run and mumbled his moves each time they were completed. “Monkey roll, air baby, windmill, top rock…this is it! Air flare…to…90.”

Four revolutions and the crowd went insane. The cheers were both sickening and deafening. What do you do when the whole world seemed as if they are against you, or in the very least cheering for your number one enemy?

I’ll tell you what you will do—you’ll bring it hard and you give them something to talk about.

“You can do this, Aurora,” Bamboo whispered in my ear.

“We can do this,” I corrected her.

I jumped to the floor and broke out into my top rock, lowering myself to do a six-step and windmill, then pushing myself up to a hollowback. Ashley and Katy soon joined me in the center and together we did a synchronized routine combining yoga, hip hop, merengue, and ending in matching pikes.

  It was time.

Taking a deep breath, I began to imitate Craig’s exact movements. From the monkey roll, to windmill to top rock, and then finally my own variation of air flare to 90s.

That’s it, Aura! Show him that girls can’t only do what he can, but they can do it better!

Mitch and I had worked on this precise combo before our little blow up and I somehow perfected it in the past few nights during Belladonna practices.

I did my air flares, but lowered myself into chair flares, which were much harder to do given the angle of your arms each time your body twisted in the air. The crowd screamed in appreciation so it must have looked cool. I could almost imagine what Craig’s face looked like and wished I could see it—but not yet. I wasn’t finished.

After a few flares, I kicked myself up to do my own 90s, only this time I’d do it better than he had.

  I spun around…one…two…three…four…

  Five!

I jumped to my feet and did my ending pose, simultaneously staring at Craig, whose face had contorted into utter humiliation. I smiled smugly and glanced over at the audience, who were going crazy.

  “What the fuck was that?”

  “Oh my God!”

  “B-girl Aura just killed it!”

The Belladonnas rushed toward me and threw their arms around my body. This time no tears were held back. We didn’t even have to hear the judge’s decision. We all knew who the winner was. Everybody did. A few members of Annihilation even applauded in our honor.

“The Belladonnas take it!” Julian’s voice was drowned out by the ear piercing rumbling echoing throughout the gym. Different crews rushed the stage to congratulate us, but I only cared to see one person.

I wove my way through the crush of the crowd, feeling extremely overwhelmed.

“Mitch? Mitch?” Shit. I hope he wasn’t getting tossed around. His neck wasn’t healed! “Mitch? Where are you?”

A pair of arms gripped my waist and I instantly felt calmed.

“I’m here, baby,” he whispered into my ear.

Letting out a sigh of relief, I spun around and tiptoed as high as I could, placing a kiss on his lips.

“What did you just do? That was insane!” He grinned proudly, squeezing me tightly.

“I did it!” I gasped, the reality of the situation finally hitting me full force.

  “You hella did it.”

I shut my eyes and pressed my face against his chest. Tears flowed down my cheeks, but I didn’t care that I was probably staining his heather grey shirt with black mascara. All that mattered was that we were together. In fact, it felt as if we were the only two in the room. Until…

  “Yo, Aura!”

Mitch immediately let go of me and stiffened defensively as Craig came up beside us.

Feeling embarrassed that I was a bit “emotional,” I quickly wiped my eyes and lifted my chin. “What do you want?”

It looked as if it pained him to speak the next words. “You did good out there.”

Surprise didn’t even begin to cover how I felt. Frowning, I nodded suspiciously. “Thanks.”

“You know, maybe having a b-girl in your crew ain’t such a bad thing. You still down to roll with Annihilation?”

My mouth dropped open. I glanced over at Mitch, whose lip twitched angrily. I couldn’t believe Craig had the audacity to try to recruit me now. Not only was Mitch no longer in Annihilation, but I had my own crew. One I would never leave behind.

I snorted and shook my head. “Nah. I think estrogen is the way to go.”

Craig grunted and turned away. As I watched him leave, I glanced up at the Belladonnas, who were still celebrating on stage. I wasn’t surprised to catch Clemence and Katy sneaking a quick kiss when they thought nobody was watching.

“Guess estrogen is the way to go,” Mitch quipped.

“Actually, I think they have the right idea.” I tiptoed once again and kissed Mitch as hard as I dared, given his situation.

He smiled against my lips and said, “Oh, yeah. The best idea.”

  EPILOGUE

The bed squeaked rather too loudly for my liking. I winced, pressing my hand against the wall. “Can you cool it a bit? Chase is going to hear us.”

“Please, I heard him and Bianca going crazy the night before. You worried about a squeaking mattress? Why not listen to a pounding headboard?”

I scrunched up my face. “Okay, that’s gross.”

“Yeah.” A drop of sweat rolled off Mitch’s nose and landed on my forehead. I scrunched up my nose and laughed. “Oh, you like that, huh?” he chuckled back.

“Mmm.” I closed my eyes, feeling my insides pulse, warning of an impending orgasm. My breaths quickened and my legs automatically pulled together so they were pressed against Mitch’s side. The sudden movement probably took him over the edge too, because his thrusts soon became harder and more pronounced. He shuddered above my body before crashing down onto my chest.

Panting, he rolled over beside me and wrapped his arms around my perspiration slicked body. “That was fun.”

“Oh, yeah. Glad we don’t have to worry about that neck brace anymore.”

  He grimaced. “Don’t remind me.”

It was now spring semester of my junior year and thinking back to sophomore year—my first at Cal State, is still quite an experience. After beating Craig at the Battle of the Crews, Annihilation minus Mitch had steadily lost their footing and went from number one to…well, they were still quite good, but they definitely weren’t winners anymore. I guess it didn’t help that they no longer had Sal’s storefront to practice in.

A knock on the door interrupted us and I couldn’t help but groan when I heard Chase call out, “You two done humping like bunnies? We have practice.”

My cheeks flushed, but Mitch couldn’t help but laugh. “Meet you there, dude.”

“Okay, whatever.” Chase paused for a moment and added mischievously. ‘Hope you used protection!”

Now I couldn’t help but laugh. “Go away!”

  “I’m walking.”

I shut my eyes and shook my head. “Oh my gosh, that was embarrassing.”

“Why? I love my girlfriend and he knows it.”

“Oh, you love me?” I smiled and pressed a kiss on the tip of his nose. He answered by wrapping his arms around my waist and rolling me back toward the bed so that he was hovering above me.

“Did I ever tell you how lucky I am?” he cooed.

I narrowed my eyes. “Buttering me up isn’t going to let me go easy on you guys next week. You know, the Belladonnas are going to win…again.”

Mitch threw his head back and laughed. “That was a lucky shot. We’ll beat you this time around.”

  “So what’s our record?”

  “We’re at 6 and 6.”

  “Equals.” I grinned.

“Because I’m hella awesome and so are you,” he teased.

“Practice, now!” Chase yelled from downstairs. This time he sounded like he meant business.

Giggling sheepishly, we jumped to our feet, but not before giving each other one last kiss.
/>   “Like I said, you better step your game up, Kickwit, because Aura is going to kick your ass.”

  “You really think so?”

“Yup.” I smiled smugly. “And I always keep my promises.”
