  Chapter 1

  Mallory

His breath was cool and smelled like peppermint. It coated the curve of my neck as he leaned over to press his thick lips against the edge of my jawline. Its icy sensation was a stark contrast to the heat emanating from my skin; like pouring ice cubes into a steaming mug of cocoa. I felt the stiffness in my muscles finally relax as I ultimately surrendered my all to him.

His chocolate brown eyes were halfway closed, covered by a thick fringe of black eyelashes. Judging by his glazed eyes alone I would have suspected he was lost somewhere far away, but based on the intensity of his touch, I knew fully well that all his attention was on me and solely me.

“You like that, baby?” He sucked a path down to my collarbone, earning him an appreciative whimper as I shifted my pelvis hungrily against his. I could almost feel him smile against my neck. “We’re far from done.”

Like a puppet on a string, my thighs automatically spread to the side as if being pulled apart by some master puppeteer—he was my puppeteer. I threw my head back, sucking in my breath as I felt him thrust further into my most sensitive regions, reaching the deepest areas and filling me. Muscles I hadn’t used in months cried out, almost thanking me for that moment. It really had been far too long.

My eyes began to flutter as ecstasy took hold of my body. Like an out-of-body experience, I felt myself floating away, almost watching myself enjoy this ride of bliss. Determined to remain grounded, I focused on one of his tanned arms, as if embedding its image into my brain. Both his arms were braced on either side of my head, lifting his toned body effortlessly. I followed the path his veins made as they wrapped their way around his biceps and to the top of his hands—his manly hands. As fetishes went I loved big, strong hands. They were the complete opposite of my dainty ones formed after years of playing piano.

“Come with me, baby. Come with me.” At the sound of his voice my body began to convulse, a rapture of spasms building and taking control over me. I felt him tense and with one loud grunt he collapsed on top of me, breathing heavily as if he had just run a marathon.

He placed one last kiss against my skin—this time on my forehead—before rolling off and making himself comfortable beside me.

“I’m really happy I met you tonight, baby,” he cooed before almost immediately falling asleep. As I listened to the symphony of his snores, his words echoed ominously in my mind.

I’m really happy I met you tonight, baby.

I’m really happy I met you tonight, baby.

I’m really happy I met you tonight, baby.

I, Mallory Carmichael, just had my first one-night stand.

Quietly pushing his arm off my bare chest, I squirmed toward the edge of the high-rise bed, carefully throwing both legs off the side. Thanking the heavens that the hotel’s mattress was made out of memory foam as opposed to squeaking bedsprings, I jumped onto the fluffy carpet and hastily gathered my clothes in record time.

As I pulled on one leg of my skinny jeans and then the other, I waited, expecting the feelings of guilt and shame to come at me full force.

  Nothing came.

Grabbing the pair of borrowed stiletto pumps, I quickly padded to the door, practically sprinting when I reached the thankfully empty hallway. Once I was in the safety of the elevator, I finally allowed myself to let go of the breath I hadn’t realized I was holding. Sinking back against the mirrored wall paneling, I bent my head forward and blew my blonde bangs away from my face.

As I eyed the reflection of my flushed face and swollen lips, I couldn’t help but chuckle. “Mallory, what did you do?”

  ***

“Slut!” A camera’s bright flash went off, momentarily blinding me. As I blinked away the spots that clouded my vision, I heard my roommates break out into song. “Mallory had sex, Mallory had sex!”

“Shhh!” I hissed, shutting the front door behind me. “Do you want to wake up the neighbors? You know Mrs. Jonas is just waiting for one more infraction before reporting us to the landlord. Do you really want us to get evicted?”

My roommates, Jinny and Claudia, were sprawled on our oversized couch, cackling like a bunch of hyenas. The two were obviously winding down from our night at Club Mal. Their faces were still red, puffy, and sweaty from the countless shots and unending dancing we partook in since eight that evening. Claudia, whose head was hanging upside down from the couch, shook the undeveloped Polaroid from her prized ‘vintage camera straight from the 80s!’ as she would say, blowing against the shiny film as if it would coax the picture to show.

“You do know that won’t make the picture show up any quicker, right? Polaroid even said so,” I declared with a scowl, tossing the hot pink stilettos onto the floor in front of her. “Thanks for the shoes, by the way.”

Giggling, she righted herself and shrugged. “I don’t care. This is going on our Fridge of Shame regardless of when the photo shows up.”

Ah, the Fridge of Shame. A kitchen appliance that perfectly exemplified what was wrong with our generation. Plastered with photos of party fouls, uninhibited nights, walks-of-shame, and dates gone wrong, it really helped aid our dieting efforts. Hell, even one glance at the lurid photos made me lose my appetite on a number of occasions.

With a wide grin on her face, Claudia walked up to me and waved the photo in front of my face, holding it up with her thumb and index finger. “This should be the new spotlight piece, don’t you
think?”

I cringed, staring at the picture. The girl staring back at me, with the smeared eyeliner that accentuated that deer-caught-in-headlights look, seemed oddly like a stranger. Were we really one and the same?

I reached out, trying to snatch the photo away, but even in her drunken stupor, Claudia was too quick for me. “Nope. Not happening. I need a photo to replace the one you took of me last month,” she replied haughtily.

“Not my fault you’re in the Walk of Shame hall of fame,” I replied with a snicker. “Tell me, whatever happened to that Sean guy?”

“It was a hookup. I don’t keep up with all of that. Besides, it’s about time we have a new M.V.P.” Claudia stomped back toward the couch and plopped down, her legs flying up in front of her. She settled into the fluffy cushions and beamed at me.

“What?” I shifted uncomfortably, unable to look in her amber colored eyes.

“Spill it. We want to know what it was like to finally pour the water on your sexual drought,” Jinny replied before Claudia could get a single word out.

I narrowed my eyes at both girls and pursed my lips. We’d been friends since we were thrust together on the same floor of our freshman year dormitory. Though none of us were roomed together that year, we all happened to be assigned our own respective roommates from hell and subsequently bonded over our late nights in the Student Commons as we avoided our dorms. Now during our last semester at San Diego University we were all nice and cozy in an apartment located in the heart of the city, away from those devils’ spawn we used to call roommates.

But times like this made me really miss my old ‘friend’ Alice.

Claudia’s raspy voice, which sounded odd coming from such a petite girl, called out suspiciously. “What was it about this guy that broke your no hookup rule?”

“What no hookup rule?” I asked with feigned innocence.

Jinny burst in laughter. “Uh, the rule you’ve only implemented since I’ve known you. You know, the no ‘pick a dick’ or ‘ride all night in the wild’—”

“I get it, I get it,” I muttered as I shrugged off my leather coat and planted myself on the extra seat in our living room, making sure to move it as far away from my friends as possible. “Just because I’m not a hussy like some girls I know…”

“Hey! I object,” Claudia exclaimed, raising a finger.

“I don’t,” Jinny interjected, causing both girls to break into giggles.

As hard as I tried, I couldn’t fight the smile that snuck on my face. Feeling my lips curl into a slight grin, I explained, “Don’t be mad because I don’t believe in casual sex. I believe sex should be intimate and special and—”

“With a hottie from Club Mal?” Claudia interrupted with a snort that sounded like a baby pig. “Obviously tonight your rules didn’t matter. Unless that dude was a boyfriend you never told us about.”

Jinny pushed back her thick red braid and gasped. “Wait, you guys didn’t elope or anything, did you?”

“Do we look like we’re in Vegas?” I couldn’t fight the slight annoyance that worked its way through me. Ever since Jinny had gotten engaged, everything was about marriage and weddings. Never mind that we were all in our early twenties, and in my opinion, way too young to worry about such crap.

She shrugged, either ignoring my irritated tone or just flat out oblivious to it. “Just wanted to make sure. I mean, don’t think I haven’t noticed your attitude ever since…” Her voice trailed off as she eyed me sheepishly.

I lifted an eyebrow. “Ever since what, Jinny?”

Claudia looked as if she wanted to face palm in Jinny’s honor. Jinny shifted uncomfortably, barely able to look me in the eye. “It’s no secret that you’ve been acting a bit weird ever since you found out Raphael and I were getting married. Are you…are you jealous or something?”

Before I could respond, not that I really wanted to dignify the question with an answer, Claudia tapped her chin in wonder and asked, “About that…who names their kid after a turtle, anyway?”

“He’s named after a saint, you turd,” Jinny snapped.

“Are you sure you should be using those two words together in a sentence?” I teased, despite feeling a bit hurt by her accusation. Though it was true I felt odd about their engagement, I was definitely as far from being jealous as possible. Hell, we were twenty-one! We had our whole lives ahead of us. Besides, they’d only been going out for a little over seven months. If that didn’t scream ‘doomed to fail,’ I didn’t know what did.

Sighing, I stretched out my toes and let out a shrill laugh. “I’m not jealous of your happiness, though I am a bit offended you’d even think that, actually.”

“Well, of course it sounds offensive when you say it like that,” she snapped.

“How else am I going to say it, then? Maybe you shouldn’t have brought it up if you didn’t want the answer.” I marveled at how narrow minded she could be at times. As I was stewing in impatience I caught sight of Claudia staring at me. “Something on your mind too? By all means, let’s attack Mallory tonight.”

“We’re not trying to be mean. It’s just that you did leave in the middle of her bachelorette party. Sorry, but that does seem a bit suspect.”

My gaze automatically fell on the coffee table, which was piled high with pink boas, penis-shaped whistles, penis-shaped straws, penis-shaped plastic sunglasses—seriously, when the hell did the word ‘bachelorette’ automatically conjure up images of tiny shafts?

“First of all, it wasn’t even a true bachelorette party.”

“Of course it was!” Jinny argued.

“When’s your wedding date?” I shot back. When she didn’t answer, I nodded my head knowingly. “See what I mean?”

  “Shut up.”

I chuckled softly. “As I was trying to say earlier, you guys practically shoved me out that club door when he asked if I wanted to get a bite to eat. You both are definitely the true definition of peer pressure.”

“Yes!” Claudia cheered and high-fived Jinny.

I burst into giggles, feeling my earlier irritation melting off of me. That was the thing about me and my friends; we could never stay angry at one another for too long.

With a shake of my head, I exclaimed, “I’m serious! It was like once your eyes landed on…on…um…” I cringed, scratching at my stiff, hairspray-infused locks. Aqua Net wasn’t lying in those ads about everlasting curls. My usual stick straight hair bounced in a way that would have made Barbie jealous.

“Oh my gosh! You don’t even know his name, do you?” Jinny broke out into more hysterics, covering her mouth with her left hand. My gaze immediately flitted up to the humble princess cut solitaire on her finger, automatically causing a wave of envy in my stomach. Maybe I was a little jealous—sue me.

“Did you even get his number?”

I shook my head with a grimace. “No. I have officially become one of those girls that I hate so very, very much.”

“I am so proud of you!” Claudia clapped her hands and stomped her bare feet on the floor. I flinched, half expecting Mrs. Jonas to bang against the ceiling with a broomstick. “Who would have thought our little good girl could pull off such an awesome one night stand? So tell us…how was it?”

Both leaned toward me comically, looking like two kids expecting some fairy tale bedtime story. Rolling my eyes, I relented, not so much to appease them, but because I was honestly bursting at the seams to talk about it. After years of being a Type A goodie goodie, I had to admit that doing something out of left field actually felt kind of nice…as did the multiple orgasms that what’s his name gave me.

“It was great,” I gushed. “He wasn’t too rough and made sure he took care of me first. He only went as far as I’d let him.”

Claudia visibly swooned. “A hot guy who is also a gentleman? I didn’t know they made those anymore.”

Jinny nodded in wholehearted agreement, once again leading me to question her impending nuptials. I shoved those feelings aside and conti
nued my little story. “I’ve just never been with a guy like him before, you know? He was sweet, hot, and could really move in bed. He was just…”

“A wonder dick.” Claudia nodded her head with a wink.

“Um, a what?” I shook my head in confusion.

“It has double meaning. First, as you can probably tell, it means that he’s gifted in the sack.”

“It was obvious he was experienced,” I agreed, thinking about the way he’d whisper into my ear. I’d never been one to feel comfortable talking during sex, but after that night I may have to rethink my stance on it.

“Obviously experienced,” Jinny repeated in agreement as she waved a manicured hand in the air.

Claudia nodded in satisfaction. “And second, it means that he was so sweet that you can’t help but wonder if it was all a ruse and he’s actually a dick in real life.”

“Don’t hold back or anything,” I said with a laugh.

Her shoulders bounced in a mock shrug. “A good way to figure it out is by dissecting the morning after…” Her voice trailed off as she glanced at the clock. “Or rather night after? You do know it’s only three, right? Why are you back home so early?”

“I couldn’t—wouldn’t—stay, so I decided to leave.” I bit back a laugh as I watched my friends’ lips pucker with disappointment.

“So you didn’t get his number or anything?”

I shook my head. “Nope. Once he fell asleep I ran straight out of his hotel room.”

“Hotel room? A one night stand with a guy who isn’t even from town? Girl, for someone’s first venture into the world of casual sex, you have officially hit the jackpot.” Jinny whistled appreciatively. “What was he in town for, anyway?”

I narrowed my eyes, trying my hardest to sift through my foggy alcohol-saturated memories. I wasn’t drunk when I slept with the guy, but I wasn’t exactly sober either. “He was in town for some dance competition or something.”
